The Kingdom of Spain is a state in southwest Europe and a parliamentary hereditary monarchy with around 47 million inhabitants. Spanish territory also includes the two autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla on the North African coast, as well as the island groups of the Balearic and Canary Islands in the Mediterranean.

Spain is a member of the European Union, the UN, NATO and the Eurozone. The country is one of the very highly developed countries in the world and one of the twenty largest export and import nations in the world.

Spain, like Portugal and Gibraltar, is on the Iberian Peninsula. In the northeast along the Pyrenees mountain range, Spain borders on France and the small state of Andorra and in the west on Portugal. The greatest extent from north to south is 860 kilometers, while the stretch from east to west is even 1,020 kilometers long.

Spanish, Catalan, Galician and Basque are predominantly spoken in Spain, although Spanish is the official language throughout the country.

The country's largest cities include Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Zaragoza, Malaga, Murcia, Bilbao, Alicante, Vigo, Cordoba, Valladolid, Gijon, Granada, Vitoria, La Coruna, Oviedo as well as Palma de Mallorca and Las Palmas on Gran Canaria. Santiago de Compostela with its famous cathedral is also very well known as a destination for pilgrims on the Way of St. James.

Spain is visited by almost 82 million tourists every year, making the country third in global travel statistics after France and the USA. The Canary Islands are the most important tourist destination in Spain, with 32% of all tourists traveling there. This is followed by Catalonia with Barcelona, Andalusia and Madrid, in the interior. Particularly popular travel destinations for tourists are the Pyrenees, Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Costa Brava, Costa Daurada, Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca, Costa de la Luz, Costa Verde and the Sierra Nevada.

The capital and largest city in the country is Madrid with around 3.3 million inhabitants. This makes Madrid the third largest city in the European Union after London and Berlin and the largest city in Southern Europe. The city's main attractions include the Palacio Real, Plaza Mayor, Torre Espana, Museo del Prado, Almudena Cathedral, Museo Reina Sofia, Puerta de Europa, Las Ventas, Palacio de Deportes, Palacio Longoria, the Torre Picasso, the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu - home of the famous Real Madrid football club, the Metropolis House, the Temple of Debod, the Plaza de la Puerta de Sol, the Plaza de Espana and the boulevard Calle de Alcala.

The second megacity in Spain is Barcelona with around 1.7 million inhabitants. Barcelona is located directly on the Mediterranean and is also the capital of Catalonia. With almost eight million visitors every year, the city is one of the three most visited cities in Europe. The most famous sights in Barcelona include the Sagrada Familia, the Placa de Catalunya, Casa Mila, Casa Batllo, the Cathedral of Saint Eulalia, the Royal Square, the City Museum, the City Hall, the La Rambla, the statue of Christopher Columbus, the Maritime Museum, the oceanarium, the harbor cable car, the television tower, the 142 m high Torre Agbar, triumphal arch, the Camp Nou - home of FC Barcelona, the Bethlehem Church, Park Güell, El Paix and the beach with the La Barceloneta promenade.

I have been to Spanish territory countless times, including several times in Madrid, Barcelona, Alicante and most of the Spanish islands. The last time I visited the capital Madrid was in August 2015 for two days, on the way back from my long Caribbean trip.

Spain is always a great travel destination. The friendliness and calmness of all the people as well as the hearty Spanish cuisine make every trip a real experience.

For me, Barcelona is the most beautiful city in Europe.
