The Sultanate of Brunei is a state on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia with around 500,000 inhabitants. Brunei borders the South China Sea to the north and is otherwise surrounded by Malaysian Sarawak.

The official language of Brunei is Malay and the Brunei dollar is used as the uniform national currency, with 1 euro corresponding to around 1.50 BND.

The country's largest cities include Bandar Seri Begawan, Kuala Belait, Seria, Tutong, Bangar and Kampong.

The state of Brunei consists of two parts of the country, both of which are separated from each other by the narrow Limbang Valley, which belongs to Malaysia. The highest point in the national territory is the 1,850 meter high “Bukit Pago”n, in the extreme southwest of the country.

Brunei is one of the richest countries in the world due to its enormous oil and gas reserves. In agriculture, only rice, vegetables and fruit are grown for personal use. Structured tourism is practically non-existent, with the exception of a few annual visitors.

The capital and largest city of Brunei is Bandar Seri Begawan with around 110,000 inhabitants. Bandar Seri Begawan is located on the Brunei River and has the country's only airport, not far from the city area.

Brunei's main attractions include the Palace of the Sultan of Brunei - the largest palace in the world, the Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque, the stilted water village "Kampong Ayer", the Jame'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, the Royal Regelia -Buildings with its associated museum, the night market, the Ulu Temburong National Park, the Teng Yun Temple, the Billion Barrel Monument, the Catholic Church, the Science Museum, the Local History Museum, the Brunei Museum, the Mausoleum of Sultan Bolkiah , the Masjid Kampong Pandan Mosque, the Jerudong Amusement Park, the Maritime Museum, the great Saleha Bridge, the Tamu Kiangeh market and the golden monument for the Sultan's 60th birthday, right on the river.

In November 2011 I traveled to the rich Sultanate of Brunei for two days and for the only time so far. There are daily flights from Kuala Lumpur to the capital of the small country on the island of Borneo.

It all actually started with this trip. During this period my idea came about to travel to every single country in the entire world.

Brunei is a fantastic travel destination, everything is very clean and modern, it's just a lot of fun to walk around the capital. However, the city center is also pretty deserted, with few restaurants and cafes where you can just sit down and relax.

After seeing all the large mosques and impressive buildings on foot, I booked a boat trip on the Brunei River, along the water village standing on stilts. It was very interesting to see how people can live under these circumstances. But in the end it was a great guided boat trip, an incredible experience and a once in a lifetime experience.

Brunei is definitely recommended as an excellent travel destination for a stay of just a few days. The almost completely preserved tropical rainforest also offers several hiking opportunities and many interesting excursion destinations in almost untouched nature.

However, if you are visiting for a longer period of time, it might get a bit boring after a few days.
