The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a state in western Central Europe with around 610,000 inhabitants. The country is part of Central Germany and forms the Benelux states with its neighbors Belgium and the Netherlands.<\/p>\n

Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in the world and the second smallest country in the European Union after Malta. It borders on France to the south, Belgium to the west and Germany to the east.<\/p>\n

The capital of the same name, Luxembourg, is also the administrative headquarters of the European Union, the seat of the European Court of Justice, the European Court of Auditors and the European Investment Bank. The city is also the meeting place of the Council of the European Union. With around 100,000 inhabitants, the capital is also the most populous city in Luxembourg. Other larger cities are Esch, Differdange and Dudelange.<\/p>\n

The proportion of foreigners in Luxembourg is 47% of the total population. The native language is Luxembourgish, German and French are also spoken there, so Luxembourg has three official languages. Traditionally, the majority of the population is Roman Catholic.<\/p>\n

The financial services sector contributes around 28% to the national economy due to the favorable tax environment. Many large companies in this sector are also based in Luxembourg, such as 152 registered banks.<\/p>\n

The sights of Luxembourg include the Grand Ducal Palace, the \u201cCathedral of Our Lady\u201d, the Museum of Modern Art, the Lucilinburhuc Castle, the central square \u201cPlace Guillaume\u201d, the \u201cGelle Fra\u201d monument, the National Museum, the Neum\u00fcnster Abbey, the Historical Museum of the City of Luxembourg and the Caves of the Casemates.<\/p>\n

I have been to Luxembourg a few times in the past, but only for work reasons and not for tourist purposes. In August 2012 I took my only tourist day trip to Luxembourg. The city impresses with its modern architecture and its absolute cleanliness.<\/p>\n

The small state is definitely always a worthwhile travel destination, particularly popular with day tourists on the weekends for shopping or with fuel tourists due to the cheap petrol prices. Due to the tax advantages of the state of Luxembourg, most goods are much cheaper than in the surrounding neighboring countries.<\/p>\n\n
