Poland is a parliamentary republic in Central Europe with around 38.6 million inhabitants and the sixth largest country in the European Union. Poland is also a member of NATO, the United Nations and the Council of Europe. The state borders the Baltic Sea and the Russian Kaliningrad Oblast in the north, Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine in the east, Slovakia and the Czech Republic in the south and Germany in the west. The official national language is Polish and the national currency is the Polish zloty, where 1 euro corresponds to around 4.25 PLN.<\/p>\n

The three important mountain ranges in Poland are the Sudetes, the Carpathians and the Holy Cross Mountains. The Tatra Mountains on the Polish-Slovakian border are, along with the Alps, the only high mountains in Central Europe.<\/p>\n

Since the Second World War, the country has been largely dominated by the Catholic religion. The late Pope John Paul II, who was the Archbishop of Krakow before his election as Pope, has a particularly high reputation in Poland.<\/p>\n

The ten largest cities in the country are Warsaw, Krakow, Lodz, Wroclaw, Poznan, Gdansk, Stettin, Bydgoszcz, Lublin and Katowice.<\/p>\n

Poland's economy ranks 24th in the world in terms of gross domestic product and purchasing power. The state's largely open economy benefits greatly from free trade in the European Union.<\/p>\n

Due to the numerous lakes and wide sandy sea coast, water sports such as sailing, surfing, diving, kayaking, swimming and fishing are very popular in Poland. As a result, international tourism in the country is growing steadily every year and is now an important factor for the local economy.<\/p>\n

The most visited tourist destinations in Poland include the Auschwitz Memorial, Krakow Market Square, Lublin Castle, Wroclaw Old Town, Orlowo Pier in Gdynia, Gda?sk Cathedral, Pozna? Old Market, St. Mary's Church in Krakow, Old Town of Gdansk, the Cathedral Island in Wroclaw, the old town of Torun, Stare Miasto in Krakow, the Church of Peace in Swidnica, the market square in Wroclaw, the Marienburg in Malbork, the Zamek Chojnik in Jelena Gora, the Wawel Royal Castle in Krakow and the Rogalin Palace.<\/p>\n

The capital and largest city of Poland is Warsaw, which is also the country's most populous city with over 1.7 million inhabitants. Warsaw is an important trading center in Eastern and Central Europe and therefore enjoys great cultural and political importance. The city is home to numerous state institutions, monuments, theaters, museums, technical colleges and universities.<\/p>\n

Warsaw is located on the Middle Vistula, the country's longest river at 1022 km. The main sights of the capital include the \u201cTeatr Wielki\u201d \u2013 State Opera and National Theater, the Warsaw Royal Castle, the \u201cMuseum of the Earth\u201d, the National Museum, St. John's Cathedral, the Sigismund Column, the \u201cPalace under the Tin Roof\u201d, the sculpture of the river maiden Syrenka , the Historical Museum of the City of Warsaw, the Jesuit Church, the Mokronowski Palace, the Royal Route, the St. Anne's Church, the Branicki Palace, the St. Alexander Church, the Modlin Fortress, the Visitation Church and the Palace of Culture, a landmark of Warsaw.<\/p>\n

The most representative square in Warsaw's Old Town is the large triangular Castle Square, which attracts many visitors every day.<\/p>\n

I had the opportunity to visit the city of Warsaw in June 2012 on the occasion of the EURO2012 football and I really enjoyed the hospitality there, especially in the beautiful old town. I had already explored many other cities and areas on my twenty or so trips to neighboring Poland. I was there several times in Gdansk, Sopot and Krakow.<\/p>\n

The country of Poland has now become a very interesting tourist destination on the European map. In particular, the varied landscape, the excellent Polish cuisine and the fairly affordable prices make the country so unique. I can recommend Poland at any time for a holiday lasting several days.<\/p>\n\n
