Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe with almost 10 million inhabitants. The neighboring countries are Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia. Hungary is a member of the European Union and NATO. The official national currency is the Hungarian forint, where 1 euro corresponds to around 310 HUF.<\/p>\n

By far the largest city in Hungary is the capital Budapest with almost 1.8 million inhabitants. This means that around 20% of the country's population live in the capital. Other large cities in the country are Debrecen, Miskolc, Szeged, Pecs, Gy\u00f6r, Nyiregyhaza, Kecskemet and Szekesfehervar. The language commonly used in Hungary is Hungarian and is spoken by almost all residents.<\/p>\n

The longest river in Hungary is the Danube, whose catchment area includes the entire Hungarian territory. The largest lake in the country is Lake Balaton and also the largest lake in Central Europe. Lake Balaton is, along with the capital Budapest and the Puszta, the most important tourist area in Hungary. Its Tihany peninsula, the many beaches, the healthy spas and various thermal springs attract numerous bathing tourists. Every year, over a million visitors come to the region around Lake Balaton, which is the largest share of all tourism in Hungary. Half of all foreign guests come from Germany. Fishing and wine growing around Lake Balaton also represent an additional important source of income.<\/p>\n

The capital Budapest is the ninth largest city in the European Union. The municipality of Budapest was created by merging the previously independent cities of Buda, Obuda and Pest. The city lies on the Danube, at the transition from the Hungarian low mountain range to the Hungarian lowlands. There are many notable buildings on the banks of the Danube, such as the rocky Gellertberg with the Statue of Liberty or the citadel. Other important sights in Budapest include the Parliament Building, the State Opera, the Matthias Church, St. Stephen's Basilica, the Liberty Bridge, the Statue of St. Stephen, Heroes' Square with the Millennium Monument, the Great Market Hall, the Buda Castle, the Hungarian National Theater, the Comedy Theater, Waiznergasse - Budapest's main shopping street, the Elisabeth Bridge, the Palace of Arts, the Congress Center and the Budapest spas.<\/p>\n

As a German citizen who grew up in eastern Germany, I used to be in Hungary very often. I usually spent my annual summer vacation at Lake Balaton, with a few stops in Budapest. Even later, after the German border opened, Balaton was still a very popular and cheap travel destination, especially for semi-annual trips with my friends.<\/p>\n

The travel destination Hungary always remains something special, especially because of its unique landscape and very special cuisine. The most famous Hungarian specialties include Hungarian goulash soup, Szeged goulash, kettle goulash, paprika chicken, pancakes, Debrezin sausage and the world-famous Hungarian salami. After the hearty meal, round everything off with one of the world-famous Hungarian liqueurs, Palinka or Unicum.<\/p>\n\n
