Wales is part of the United Kingdom with around 3.2 million inhabitants, making it the smallest part of Great Britain. Wales is located west of England, bordered by the Irish Sea to the north, the St. George's Canal to the west and the Bristol Channel to the south. The coast is mainly characterized by cliffs and extensive beaches.<\/p>\n

Large areas of the country consist of green meadows, flat mountains, barren landscapes and some moors. Wales has a changeable maritime climate all year round and is therefore one of the wettest countries in Europe.<\/p>\n

Wales has enormous deposits of copper, lime, slate, tin, coal, silver, zinc and lead.<\/p>\n

The country's largest cities include Cardiff, Swansea, Barry, Newport, Wrexham, Neath, Cwmbran, Lianelli and Bridgend.<\/p>\n

Almost 78 % of the population are born Welsh, another 19% are born English, the rest are Scottish, Irish and Northern Irish. Only just over 13% of the population still speaks Welsh, everyone else speaks English. Payment in Wales is made with the British pound sterling, where 10 euros corresponds to approximately 8.80 GBP.<\/p>\n

The capital and most populous city of Wales is Cardiff with around 360,000 inhabitants. The port city is geographically located in the very south of Wales and is crossed by the River Taff.<\/p>\n

The port of Cardiff was once one of the busiest ports in the world, including the world's largest coal transshipment point. After the collapse of coal mining, the importance of the port declined sharply.<\/p>\n

Cardiff is now the financial capital of Wales, as well as an important services center. The city's most important economic sectors include automotive and mechanical engineering, information technology, insurance, financial services and tourism.<\/p>\n

The city's main attractions include the Cardiff Bay Millennium Center, the Town Hall - City Hall, the University of Wales, St. Fagans Castle, Roath Park, the Pierhead Building, the National Museum Cardiff, the 80 meter high Capital Tower, Cardiff Castle, Cardiff Millennium Stadium, Llandaff Cathedral, Llandaff Palace, the neo-Gothic Cardiff Cathedral, the Caerphilly Castle complex, the Wales Genocide Memorial and Bute Park.<\/p>\n

The country's only airport is Cardiff Airport and is located approximately 16 kilometers from the city center.<\/p>\n

I have only had the opportunity to travel to the country of Wales once. On a very rainy and windy day I visited the typical Welsh town of Wrexham in the north-east of the country.<\/p>\n\n
