The Republic of Botswana, also known as Botswana, is a landlocked country in southern Africa with around two million inhabitants. This makes it one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. The state borders Zambia and Zimbabwe to the northeast, Namibia to the west and north, and South Africa to the southeast and south. In the northeast at Kazungula, the borders of Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia meet in the middle of the Zambezi River at a single point, the only four-border triangle in the world.<\/p>\n

Botswana has the lowest level of corruption of any African country. Nearly 20% of the country's adults are infected with HIV, the third highest figure anywhere in the world. This means that there is a high mortality rate from AIDS in the country.<\/p>\n

Botswana consists largely of the Kalahari semi-desert in the south, the predominantly highlands and the Okavango Delta in the northwest. The highest mountain in Botswana is Monalanong Hill at 1,494 meters above sea level.<\/p>\n

The country's largest cities are Gaborone, Francistown, Maun, Molepolole and Mogoditshane. The official languages of Botswana are English and Setswana and the official national currency is the Botswanan Pula, where 1 euro corresponds to around 11.60 BWP. The Pula is one of the most stable currencies in Africa.<\/p>\n

Numerous typically African mammal species occur in Botswana, such as elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, antelopes, rhinos, cheetahs, zebras and hippos.<\/p>\n

Thanks to its large diamond deposits, Botswana is one of the more economically stable and successful countries on the African continent. Diamond exports account for 72% of Botswana's total exports. Other economic sectors in the country include meat production and tourism.<\/p>\n

The main tourist attractions include Botswana's many national parks, such as the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, Moremi Wildlife Reserve, Savute Reserve, Makgadikgadi National Park, Khama Rhino Sanctuary, Kubu Island, Baines Baobabs, Moremi Gorge, the Khwai River Bridge, Nata Bird Sanctuary, the Kalahari Desert and the Tsodilo Hills.<\/p>\n

The capital of Botswana is Gaborone with around 235,000 inhabitants. The city is the economic and cultural center of the country and lies at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters. The main attractions of the city include the National Museum, Matsiengs Footprints, Trinity Church, Sri Balaji Temple, National Assembly Building, Krishna Balaram Palace, reservoir - Gaborone Dam, Khutse Game Reserve, Gaborone Game Reserve , the Christ the King Cathedral, the Gaborone Sun Casino, the Three Chiefs Statues and the Mokolodi Nature Reserve.<\/p>\n

In July 2018 I visited Gaborone during my third major trip to Africa. The yellow-brown desert landscape in Botswana is beautiful to look at, while the capital is very spacious. The few sights in Gaborone are all very far apart, but the driver I booked at the airport for 20 euros took me to every corner of the city. The highlights are certainly the \u201cThree Bosses Statue\u201d with the beautifully landscaped surrounding square and the Parliament in the city center. In the evening I took a plane from South African to Johannesburg in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n
