Liberia is a country in West Africa with around 4.2 million inhabitants. The country is located near the equator and borders Guinea to the north and northeast, Ivory Coast to the east, Sierra Leone to the northwest and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The unofficial official language of Liberia is English and the Liberian dollar is used as payment, with 1 euro equaling around 162 LRD. The country's largest cities include Monrovia, Gbarnga, Ganta, Buchanan, Kakata, Voinjama, Harbel, Zwedru, Pleebo, Foya, Greenville and Harper.<\/p>\n

The national territory consists mainly of mountainous areas between 300 and 500 meters high, of which the tropical rainforest zone occupies almost 62% of the entire area. The highest point in Liberia is Mount Wuteve in the north at 1,440 meters.<\/p>\n

The vegetation in Liberia is dominated by the evergreen rainforest, the wet savannah and the Atlantic coast covered with mangrove swamps. There are also some particularly valuable tree species, such as teak and mahogany.<\/p>\n

The most famous mammals in the country include hippos, leopards, forest elephants, colobus monkeys, monkeys, chimpanzees, crocodiles, antelopes, forest buffaloes, scorpions, lizards and some poisonous snake species. Due to some endangered plant and animal species, the state of Liberia has created four protected areas, such as the Gola Forest National Park, the Ramsar areas, the Nimba Mountains Nature Reserve and the Sapo National Park.<\/p>\n

Liberia is now one of the poorest countries in the world, after having been one of the countries with the highest economic growth in the world in the mid-20th century. However, everything was destroyed by the many civil wars in our own country. The state's most important export goods are iron ore, natural rubber, tropical timber, rubber, diamonds, cocoa, coffee, sugar cane, cotton, pineapple and oil palm products.<\/p>\n

The capital and largest city of Liberia is Monrovia with around 1.2 million inhabitants. Monrovia lies at the mouth of the Saint Paul River into the Atlantic and around 41% of the city's area is occupied by swampy mangrove forests. The city's few attractions include the historic Centennial Pavilion, Providence Island, Ce Ce Beach, the Sacred Heart Cathedral, the National Museum of Liberia, the Mount Coffee Dam, the seaport and the Matadi Central Mosque.<\/p>\n

In July 2016, I traveled to Liberia for two days during my West Africa trip. Already after arriving in Monrovia, the consequences of the 14-year civil war up to 2003 could still be clearly seen. Many buildings in the capital have been destroyed, the two largest hotels have even been closed for years and everything seems a bit eerie for tourists.<\/p>\n

I have never had such problems booking a hotel in any country in the world before; there are simply almost no offers. Except for a newly opened modern two-story hotel right by the sea, where I was lucky enough to book a room from Germany for a lot of money.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, it rained heavily during my stay, so I was only able to see the city while sitting in a taxi. Because of the high crime rate in Monrovia, it may have been better that way in the end.<\/p>\n\n
