Rwanda or Rwanda is a landlocked country in East Africa and, with around 13.5 million inhabitants, the most densely populated country in Africa. The state borders on the DR Congo to the west, Burundi to the south, Tanzania to the east and Uganda to the north. The country's four official languages are English, French, Kinyarwanda and Swahili and the official national currency is the Rwandan franc, with 1 euro equaling around 1,037 RWF.<\/p>\n

The country's largest cities include Kigali, Gisenyi, Ruhengeri, Cyangugu, Gitarama, Butare, Nyanza, Bugarama, Byumba, Kibuye and Kayonza.<\/p>\n

Rwanda was a German colony until 1916, then a Belgian mandate before gaining independence in 1962. Due to its hilly landscape throughout the national territory, Rwanda is also called \u201cThe Land of a Thousand Hills\u201d. The majority of the state's territory is a highland with an altitude of over 1,500 meters. The largest elevation in the country is the volcanic mountain Karisimbi at 4,507 meters. The highlands of Rwanda are considered the headwaters of the White Nile and the Congo, two important rivers in Africa.<\/p>\n

There are three national parks in Rwanda, such as the Volcanoes National Park, the Nyungwe Forest and the Akagera National Park. The high mountains of Rwanda are characterized by a unique flora and fauna. The local animal species include the rare mountain gorilla, monkeys, antelopes, zebras, giraffes, water buffalo, topis, impalas, elephants, lions, leopards, hippopotamuses, crocodiles and countless species of birds.<\/p>\n

Rwanda used to be one of the poorest countries in Africa due to its high population density and constant fighting between the Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups. Around two thirds of the residents live below the poverty line, sometimes even in absolute poverty.<\/p>\n

Rwanda has made significant economic progress in recent years. Agriculture and services represent the largest share of the domestic economy, with around 42% each, while industry and exports make up the rest. However, the Bralirwa brand, a brewery and soft drink manufacturer, generates the majority of the share; other export products include coffee, tea and tin ore.<\/p>\n

Tourism is not yet very strong in Rwanda; the focus is particularly on wealthy tourists visiting the famous mountain gorillas and the national parks.<\/p>\n

The capital and largest city of Rwanda is Kigali with around 1.35 million inhabitants. Kigali is located inland at an altitude of around 1,600 meters, just south of the equator. The city of Kigali has been considered the cleanest capital on the African continent for years.<\/p>\n

Major attractions include Parliament, Kigali Art Center, Nyabugogo Market, Natural History Museum, Ivuka Art Gallery, Amahoro Stadium, Presidential Palace Museum, Art Museum, Camp Kigali Memorial, Muslim Quarter, Nyamata Church, the Ntarama Church, the Inema Art Center and the Genocide Memorial.<\/p>\n

In December 2015 I traveled to Kigali, Rwanda for two days. The city impresses with its extreme cleanliness everywhere and you can hardly believe you are in Africa. The hilly landscape and the well-paved roads make every car journey very exciting and pleasant. Even if there isn't that much to see in Kigali specifically, the landscape, the rare mountain gorillas and the good price definitely make Rwanda a worthwhile travel destination.<\/p>\n\n
