Togo is a country in West Africa with around 8.5 million inhabitants. The country borders Ghana to the west, Burkina Faso to the north, Benin to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the south on the Gulf of Guinea. Togo was a German colony until 1916, then under French administration and independent of France since 1960. The official language of Togo is French and the national currency is the CFA franc BCEAO, where 1 euro is equivalent to approximately 655 XOF.<\/p>\n

The country's largest cities include Lome, Sokode, Kpalime, Kara, Atakpeme, Dapaong, Tsevie and Anie.<\/p>\n

The small state of Togo stretches 550 kilometers from north to south, while its east-west extent is only 50 to 150 kilometers. The national territory consists of the Togo Mountains in the interior, a low savannah in the north and south and the coastal plain with sandy beaches and palm-fringed lagoons. The largest peak in Togo is the 986 meter high Mont Agou.<\/p>\n

Togo is considered an international hub for the trade in children and child slaves. Togolese children between the ages of 6 and 14 are sold to neighboring countries and over 290,000 children are exploited as workers. Around 38% of all children up to the age of 15 are put to work in their own country.<\/p>\n

Togo is a tropical, humid agricultural country, so around 72% of the employed population are employed in agriculture. The state's most important export goods are cotton, coffee, cocoa and tea. Cassava, peanuts, yams, sorghum, corn and millet are also grown for personal use. Through the mining of phosphate in the country, high-quality calcium phosphate is also exported abroad.<\/p>\n

The capital and largest city of Togo is Lome with almost two million inhabitants. Lome is located directly on the Atlantic coast and is the economic and cultural center of the country. All of Togo's import and export business runs through the capital's large seaport. The surrounding inland states of Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali also use the port with its free port zone for their trade.<\/p>\n

The main attractions of the capital include the National Museum, the Governor's Palace, the Goethe Institute, the neo-Gothic Sacre-Cour Cathedral, the Independence Square with the Independence Monument, the Maison du RPT party house, the National Library, the Museum International, the Voodoo Market, the Central Market, the Republic Street along the Atlantic Ocean and the craft market.<\/p>\n

In July 2016 I was in the capital of Togo for the first time. The relatively modern city has some taller buildings and a very beautiful waterfront. There is not the usual African chaos there like in the neighboring capitals.<\/p>\n

Lome has a brand new airport and is the most important hub for West Africa thanks to its ASKY airline. For this reason, I used the airport ten more times after that, to change planes on the way to neighboring West African countries. The airline ASKY has an extensive route network and is really highly recommended.<\/p>\n\n
