Tasmania is an island off the southern coast of Australia with a population of around 550,000. The island is an Australian state and is located about 250 kilometers from the mainland.<\/p>\n

Tasmania's largest cities include Hobart, Launceston, Burnie, Strahan, Devenport, Deloraine and Port Arthur.<\/p>\n

The highest point in the mostly mountainous area of the country is the 1,617 meter high Mount Ossa. Tasmania has a rich diversity of plants and, due to its remoteness, its own special fauna. A large part of the island's surface consists of dense forests as well as moorland and grassland. Several species of eucalyptus, acacia and beech can be found there. In terms of wildlife, kangaroos, marsupial devils, badgers, emus, wallabies, snakes as well as dolphins, whales, seals, harbor seals and elephant seals are mainly found on the coasts off Tasmania.<\/p>\n

The most important economic sectors in Tasmania are tourism, wine growing, boat building and several breweries.<\/p>\n

The capital of Tasmania is Hobart with around 230,000 inhabitants. Hobart is located in the south of the island and has a major port and airport. The city is world-famous for the annual Sydney-Hobart Regatta.<\/p>\n

Hobart's major attractions include the Botanic Gardens, Mount Wellington, historic Battery Point, Constitution Dock, Farmers' Market, Art Gallery, Theater, Salamanca Market, Sullivan's Cove, Cascade Women's Prison, St. David's Cathedral, the Maritime Museum and various breweries.<\/p>\n

In January 2017 I traveled to Hobart, Tasmania for a day. I flew with the Australian airline Jetstar from Sydney to the island in the morning and back again in the evening.<\/p>\n

In the morning I started a two-hour bus tour in Hobart to get to know all the main attractions in the capital. The trip was very interesting at a pleasant 18 degrees Celsius, the water landscape was particularly beautiful to look at, but Hobart doesn't really have many sights to offer.<\/p>\n

The afternoon at the pier and at the marina with the many restaurants and cafes were much more exciting.<\/p>\n

However, due to the wind gradually picking up, it became quite cool towards the late afternoon. At this point, wearing my denim jacket and hat, I was probably the only one freezing in Tasmania. All residents continued to walk around in their shortest clothes, because by Tasmanian standards these were mid-summer temperatures.<\/p>\n
