Papua New Guinea is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean with around 8.5 million inhabitants. The third largest island state in the world, consists mainly of the eastern part of the island of New Guinea as well as other islands and archipelagos.<\/p>\n

The official languages of Papua New Guinea are English, Tok Pisin and Hiri Motu, the national currency is the Kina, with 1 euro corresponding to around 3.80 PGK.<\/p>\n

The largest cities in the island state include Port Moresby, Lae, Madang, Wewak, Mount Hagen, Goroka, Kimbe and Daru.<\/p>\n

The highest point in Papua New Guinea is the 4,509 meter high Mount Wilhelm on the island of New Guinea. The diverse landscape in the national territory has strong differences in altitude, with many valleys, volcanoes, mountains, high mountain forests, glaciers, savannahs, swamps and a distinct tropical rainforest.<\/p>\n

In the forests and mountains of Papua New Guinea, there are still over 1,100 groups and tribes with their own religion, a specially developed language and a completely individual culture. In total, almost 900 different languages and dialects are spoken in Papua New Guinea. Approximately 85% of the population profess the Christian faith.<\/p>\n

The most important economic sectors in Papua are agriculture with the export of cocoa, coffee, palm oil and copra, the timber industry, mining and tourism.<\/p>\n

The important sights of Papua New Guinea include the approximately 100 kilometer long Kokoda Track, the Port Moresby Nature Park, the Parliament Building, the Varirata National Park, the Art Museum, the National Orchid Garden, the Port Moresby Mosque, the Balek Nature Reserve , Lake Kutubu, the Manta Ray Sanctuary on Gonubalabala Island, the Rouna Falls, the Skull Cave on Doini Island, the Lae War Cemetery, the many street markets of Mount Hagen, the Sepik River, the Adventure Park and the Bomana War Cemetery in Port Moresby and Kitava Island.<\/p>\n

The capital of Papua New Guinea is Port Moresby with around 500,000 inhabitants. The port city is located in the south of the main island and is the political and economic center of the state.<\/p>\n

In January 2017 I traveled to the island state of Papua New Guinea for two days, the only time so far. Since I'm not a big fan of hiking or excessive nature, I limited my stay to the capital only.<\/p>\n

The relatively few sights in Port Moresby were quickly covered in just a few hours, the clear highlight from my point of view was the Parliament building with its beautiful surrounding gardens.<\/p>\n

Since considerable poverty was evident on the streets of Port Moresby, I later took a taxi to explore the rest of the city even better. Basically there was nothing else worth seeing, so I ended the evening in my cozy hotel restaurant.<\/p>\n
