The Philippines is an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean with around 108 million inhabitants. The state borders, separated by water, on Malaysia in the southwest, Vietnam in the west and Indonesia in the south. The country's two official languages are Filipino, also known as Tagalog, and English. The national currency is the Philippine peso, where 1 euro corresponds to around 55 PHP.<\/p>\n

The country's largest cities include Quezon, Manila, Caloocan, Davao, Cebu, Zamboanga, Pasig, Taguig, Antipolo, Cagayan de Oro, Paranaque and Valenzuela. The Philippines is one of only two countries on the Asian continent where the majority of the population professes the Christian faith.<\/p>\n

The fifth largest island state in the world consists of over 7,600 islands, of which only around 900 are inhabited. The largest and most famous islands in the Philippines include Luzon, Mindanao, Negros, Palawan, Samar, Panay, Mindoro, Bohol, Cebu, Masbate, Leyte and Basilan. The islands border on various bodies of water and seas, including the Sulu Sea, the Celebes Sea, the South China Sea, the Philippine Sea and directly on the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n

The highest peak in the Philippine territory is the 2,954 meter high Mount Apo. Some islands are of volcanic origin, with 18 volcanoes still active today. The two largest volcanoes are the 2,462 meter high Mayon and the 1,486 meter high Pinatubo, both located on the largest island of Luzon.<\/p>\n

Tropical cyclones and typhoons can occur throughout the entire archipelago throughout the year.<\/p>\n

The economy of the Philippines is based primarily on the textile industry, rice farming, electronics, services, tourism and remittances from the approximately 10 million Filipino citizens living abroad.<\/p>\n

The island state is visited by around eight million foreign tourists every year. The country's most important sights include the holiday island of Boracay, the diving area around the Tubbataha Reef, the world-famous Pagsanjan Waterfalls, the paradisiacal beach island of Malcapuya, the landscape and diving area of Coron Bay, the rice terraces of Banaue, the Mount Pulag National Park, the Chocolate Hills of Bohol, the lagoons of El Nido, the Aguinid Falls of Samboan, the Basco Lighthouse, the Tinago Falls, the Puerto Princesa River National Park, the Daoist temple in Cebu, the coral garden with the Japanese wrecks in Coron \u2013 one of the best snorkeling and diving areas, the nature and adventure park of Baras, the Banana Island and the Sumaguing cave in Sagada.<\/p>\n

The capital of the Philippines is Manila with around two million inhabitants in the urban area and almost 25 million in the metropolitan area \u201cMetro Manila\u201d. The city is located on the largest island of Luzon and is also the political, cultural and economic center of the country.<\/p>\n

Some of the most important sights in Manila include City Hall, Governor's Palace, American Military Cemetery, Mormon Temple, Manila Cathedral, Fort Santiago, Supreme Court, Coconut Palace, Chinese Cemetery, Malacanang Palace, the Metropolitan Theater, the National Library, Rizal Park, the Basilica of San Sebastian, the Quiapo Church, the San Agustin Church, the City Fortress, the National Museum, the baroque Santa Maria Church, the Binondo Church and the Golden Mosque .<\/p>\n

In October 2011 I traveled to the Philippines for the only time so far.<\/p>\n

The four-day visit to friends in Manila was actually part of my last long vacation trip before the idea of traveling the entire world came to me.<\/p>\n

Even though we were out and about in Manila every day, I had only seen a few tourist attractions in the capital. The capital's area is huge and relatively difficult to visit due to the enormous traffic. In addition, this excursion served primarily as a visit to friends and extensive relaxation.<\/p>\n

Somehow it has never been the right time for a longer trip to the Philippines. But that will change in the near future, then I would definitely like to visit the islands of Palawan, Boracay and Bohol. I might wait until some of my friends have emigrated there in the next few years so that I can finally have a good reason to visit the country again.<\/p>\n

After three nights and a relaxing time in Manila, I continued my little tour towards Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n
