Fiji is an island nation in the South Pacific with around 920,000 inhabitants. The island is geographically east of Australia and north of New Zealand. The official languages of the country are English, Fiji and Fiji Hindi and the national currency is the Fiji dollar, with 1 euro equaling around 2.50 FJD.

The national territory consists of the Fiji archipelago with a total of 332 islands as well as the island of Rotuma around 300 kilometers to the north and the atoll Ceva-i-Ra around 300 kilometers to the southwest.

The two main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, are of volcanic origin and cover around 89% of the entire national territory. The highest peak in the country is Tomanivi at 1,324 meters.

The largest cities in Fiji include Nasinu, Suva, Lautoka, Nausori, Nadi, Labasa, Ba, Lami, Sigatoka and Savusavu.

Fiji has a tropical, humid climate all year round with occasional tropical cyclones during the summer months.

The landscape of the island state consists largely of tropical rainforest, various savannahs and mangrove forests. Fiji is home to countless different species of fish, several species of frogs, several species of birds and various species of reptiles.

Fiji's economy relies largely on agriculture, tourism and significant gold deposits. The main exports are coconut oil, wood, fishing products and textiles. The most important agricultural products include coconuts, coffee, sugar cane, pineapple, ginger, cocoa, rice and tobacco.

The island nation of Fiji annually records the largest number of tourists of all the southern Pacific islands. Tourism has enormous economic importance for the country. The biggest tourist attractions for foreign visitors are the excellent diving areas, small resort islands and the countless white beaches.

The capital of Fiji is Suva with almost 100,000 inhabitants. The city is located in the southeast of the main island of Viti Levu and is the country's political and cultural center.

Suva's main attractions include the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Government House, Fiji Museum, Clock Tower, Thurston Gardens, Suva City Library, Suva City Market and Albert Park.

In January 2019 I traveled to Fiji a total of five times during my big Pacific tour. Since the local airline “Fiji Air” is a hub for all of the surrounding islands, I had to go back to Fiji every time. In total I spent three stays in Nadi and two in the capital Suva.

The landscape in Fiji is very green and tropical, but the constant rain is also a big disadvantage. It rained so much the entire time I was in Fiji that I didn't really enjoy it anymore.

Why so many tourists spend their annual vacation there every year is, to be honest, a mystery to me. Apart from the very nice and touristy Denarau Island near Nadi, where several 5-star hotels are located, there are not even nice beaches in Fiji. The rest is more like West Africa, with broken streets and mostly dilapidated houses. After seeing most of Nadi during my entire tour, on the second day I really asked myself whether this was the well-known holiday paradise of Fiji.

It was no different later in the capital Suva, where I felt absolutely unsafe and constantly being watched, with so many dark figures on the streets. In addition, in my opinion, Fiji is completely overpriced, has constant rain and a huge plague of mosquitoes. The first night I was bitten by mosquitoes so badly that I had over 100 actual bumps all over my body. I would have preferred to leave Fiji straight away.

In total, I stayed in three different hotels in the country, all of which were completely overpriced for the standard offered. The other times I stayed privately via Couchsurfing, each time I was so happy when the time was over again.

Last but not least, there was the super unfriendly airport staff, who piled all my things in a big pile after every bag check. Something so disrespectful has never happened to me before in all my travels around the world.

As a brief summary, since I've been to this country five times now and none of them were isolated incidents, I would never set foot in Fiji again. Of all the Pacific islands, Fiji is absolutely the worst choice to spend your annual vacation. For every tourist who wants to take the long journey from Europe to visit the world-famous and alleged paradise, I can only advise against it. All of the surrounding island states are much more pleasant, significantly cheaper and you are very welcome as a guest there.
