Italy is a parliamentary republic in southern Europe with approximately 62 million inhabitants, making it the fourth most populous country on the European continent. The state borders France in the west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the northeast. The Italian territory is largely located on the Appenine Peninsula, surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, and the Po Valley, in the southern mountainous part of the Alps. The two small states of Vatican City and San Marino are completely surrounded by Italian territory. Italy also includes several offshore islands, the two largest are Sicily and Sardinia, while the smaller ones are Lampedusa, Capri, Ischia and Elba.

The state is one of the most developed countries in the world and is the eighth largest economy in the world. The predominantly Catholic population has one of the longest life expectancies in the world at around 83 years.

Most of Europe's active volcanoes are located on Italy's territory. The most famous of these are Vesuvius near Naples and the 3,323 meter high Etna and Stromboli on the island of Sicily.

The capital and largest city of Italy is Rome with almost three million inhabitants. The other ten major cities include Milan, Naples, Turin, Palermo, Genoa, Bologna, Florence, Bari and Verona. The largest metropolitan area is around Milan with over 8 million people.

Milan is one of the most important fashion metropolises in the world, home to many well-known fashion brands such as Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Gucci, Moschino, Prada, Valentino and Versace.

The “Eternal City” of Rome, located on the River Tiber, was founded in 753 BC and has countless sights and ancient buildings to offer. The most famous building of antiquity is the Colosseum, built in 80 AD. The Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona with its three fountains, the Palazzo Senatorio town hall, Castel Sant'Angelo, the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, the San Pietro Church, the Spanish Steps and Villa Borghese are also among the tourist attractions. The Christian center of Rome is the independent state of Vatican City with the imposing St. Peter's Basilica, a must for every tourist.

World-famous and one of the most popular travel destinations in Italy is the historic center of Venice in the extensive Venice Lagoon. The old town of Venice covers an area of around seven square kilometers and consists of a total of 120 islands, between which canals of different widths run through. St. Mark's Square, the largest and most famous square in the city, is the main attraction for tourism. The Grand Canal with its famous Rialto Bridge is the largest canal and therefore the main artery of Venice's 38 kilometers of waterways. The Rialto Bridge was the first bridge over the Grand Canal and is now the most famous of Venice's over 400 bridges. From the bridge you have a fantastic view of the canal with its around 1,000 gondolas.

Other tourist attractions in Italy include the breathtaking Amalfi Coast, the Milan Cathedral, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Florence Cathedral, the Verona Arena, the archaeological site in Pompeii, the Cinque Terre National Park, Lake Garda, the art collection in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence , Lake Como, the Archaeological Sites of Agrigento, the Piazza del Campo in Siena and the Sansevero Chapel in Naples.

Many years ago I traveled almost all over Italy by car. The last time I visited the beautiful southern European country was in July 2017, after having previously been to Rome, Milan and Naples several times. For this trip, the impressive Amalfi Coast was my main destination. This picturesque and unique landscape south of Naples can hardly be described in words. Any travel lover who has never been there has really missed a lot and should definitely do so. I can only expressly recommend this region from Salerno to Amalfi to Positano to everyone.

For me, Italy is one of the most beautiful travel destinations in the world and has practically everything to offer in terms of tourism. The famous Italian cuisine with pizza, pasta, Parma ham, mozzarella, Parmesan, Gorgonzola, mortadella and the accompanying wine such as Chianti or Barolo are known all over the world.

You can't help but feel good in Italy and that's why I'm definitely happy to come back again and again.
