Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean with around 1.7 million inhabitants. The island is located approximately 210 kilometers from mainland Italy and forms an autonomous Italian territory, with associated other small offshore islands.

Sardinia, with an area of around 270 by 150 kilometers, borders the French island of Corsica within 10 kilometers, the African Tunisia at a distance of around 180 kilometers and the Spanish Balearic island of Menorca at a distance of around 340 kilometers.

The majority Christian population of Sardinia primarily speaks Sardinian, the official language is Italian and in some areas also Catalan and Corsican.

The largest cities in Sardinia include Cagliari, Sassari, Olbia, Quartu Sant Elena, Nuoro, Alghero, Carbonia and Oristano.

The island has a Mediterranean climate all year round and the highest point is the 1,834 meter high mountain “Punta La Marmora”.

The island of Sardinia is home to several species of turtles, deer, wild boars and vipers.

The most important factors in the Sardinian economy are the enormous oil reserves, rich mineral resources such as iron, gold and silver, wine growing, cork production, sheep's cheese production and the over three million visitors every year.

Tourism is therefore Sardinia's main source of income, with several spectacular attractions such as national parks, grottos, Romanesque and Byzantine churches and buildings. Among the most important tourist attractions in Sardinia are the red rocks of Arbatax, the Giara di Gesturi plateau, the historical archaeological site of Barumini, the Maddalena archipelago, the Gulf of Orosei, the city of Alghero, the beach of Chia, the traditional town of Bosa, the Neptune -Grotto, the murals of Orgosolo, the Museum of Mamoiada, the medieval town of Castelsardo, the tourist resort of Villasimius with its fantastic coves and beaches, the ancient settlement of Tharros with its ruins, the beaches of the Costa Verde, the fountain temple of Santa Cristina, the petrified one Martis Forest, Mariolu Beach, Aymerich Park, Iglesias Coast, Su Mannau Grotto, Gabbiani Beach, Nuraghe Ruins, Sanluri Castle and many other white beaches and archaeological sites.

The capital of Sardinia is Cagliari with around 170,000 inhabitants. The largest city on the island is the political, cultural and, with its large free port, also the economic center of Sardinia.

The main sights of Cagliari include the old town Castello, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the baroque Basilica of Nostra Signora di Bonaria, the amphitheater, the arcades of Cagliari, the town hall, the botanical garden, the castello and the church of San Michele, the Bastione di Saint Remy square, the Elephant and Pancrazio towers, the Poetto beach, the church of San Saturno, the university, the opera, the modern art center, the large fish market, the planetarium, the archaeological museum, the marina, the San Benedetto market, the Villanova district, the central train station, the royal palace and the art gallery.

In June 2017 I visited the city of Cagliari in Sardinia for two days. I really liked the typical Italian working-class town straight away.

I had previously chosen my hotel right on the water, at the arcades, which in retrospect was a great decision. All of Cagliari's attractions were within easy reach of my hotel.

I spent the whole day in the historic old town and the lively surroundings. At the end of the day I had actually seen everything important about Cagliari.

The sometimes super narrow old town also offered countless small restaurants, street cafes and bars that were so cozy that I didn't want to go out at all.

I can only recommend Cagliari as a destination for a city trip. I have rarely felt so comfortable in a European city before and I will definitely be back soon.
