Australia is a country in the southern hemisphere with almost 25 million inhabitants. Geographically, the country lies between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, northwest of New Zealand and south of Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and East Timor.

English is officially spoken in Australia and the national currency is the Australian dollar, with 1 euro equivalent to around 1.60 AUD.

The country's largest cities include Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Canberra, Wollongong, Sunshine Coast, Newcastle, Cairns, Geelong, Townsville and Darwin.

Australia is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. The country is ultra-modern and has enormous reserves of raw materials.

Its culture makes the state a very attractive destination for foreign migrants. More than 26% of all residents were not born in Australia. There are around 400,000 Aborigines who still live in the country, a descendant of the indigenous people. A large proportion of all Australian residents profess Christianity.

Australia is the seventh largest country in the world by area and its north-south extent is 3,860 kilometers, while the distance from east to west is 4,000 kilometers. Australia's territory consists largely of deserts and semi-deserts, so-called outbacks.

The highest peak in the country is Mount Kosciuszko at 2,229 meters. The national territory is divided into the six states of Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia, Victoria and Tasmania and three territories.

Australia is one of the largest economies in the world. Their most important export goods are natural gas, iron ore, gold, diamonds, uranium, hard coal and petroleum. Beef, wine, sugar cane, wool and grain are also exported. The tourism industry generates around a tenth of the entire Australian economy, and almost nine million tourists visit the country every year. The most popular tourist destinations include the Great Barrier Reef, Kakadu National Park, Ayers Rock, the Gold Coast, Surfers Paradise, Byron Bay, Whitsunday Islands, the Sunshine Coast and the major cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Cairns and Adelaide.

The capital of Australia is Canberra with around 380,000 inhabitants. Canberra is the eighth largest city in the country, is located inland and is a so-called planned capital because Sydney and Melbourne could not come to an agreement in previous years.

The largest city in Australia is Sydney in the state of New South Wales with over five million inhabitants. The metropolis of Sydney, located on the east coast of the Pacific, is the economic center and an important attraction for tourism.

Sydney's most important attractions include the Harbour Bridge, Port Jackson, Bondi Beach, Sydney Opera House, Manly Beach, St. Andrew's Cathedral, Saint Mary's Cathedral, City Hall, Botanical Gardens, Darling Harbour, Sydney Tower, Taronga Zoo, Olympic Park, Kings Cross, Australian Museum, Circular Quay, Government House, Fort Denison and the Queen Victoria Building.

I traveled to Australia for the first time in January 2017, then again in January 2019. After several days in beautiful Sydney, I also visited Brisbane and Darwin. The city of Sydney is amazing and for me it is one of the top 5 most beautiful cities in the world. Every morning I set off for the city center, took tours of all the important attractions and didn't return to my hotel until the evening. The city's metro system is super easy, relatively cheap, and transported me everywhere. From Sydney I later flew with the Australian airline Qantas to Tasmania and Lord Howe Island.

The city of Brisbane in the state of Queensland is also very modern and tourist-friendly. The urban area of Brisbane is largely determined by the Brisbane River, which snakes its way through the city center. The climate there is tropical, making it considerably warmer than in other southern Australian cities such as Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide.

Due to the mild temperatures all year round, Brisbane is a constant tourist attraction in Australia. After I was in the city two more times in January 2019, Brisbane is definitely one of the cheapest cities in the world for me. A visit to the city's many bars, restaurants and cafes is really affordable and definitely recommended. However, on the weekends and evenings, Brisbane sometimes seems deserted.

Australia is definitely always worth a trip. There's a lot to see there, but unfortunately it's not cheap in some places.
