Bahamas is an island chain in the northern Caribbean with a population of approximately 370,000. It is located approximately 80 kilometers southeast of Florida in the United States, approximately 150 kilometers north of Cuba and northwest of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Although the Bahamas are geographically located in the Atlantic, they are still considered part of the Caribbean.

The Bahamas is made up of over 700 islands, 30 of which are inhabited, and more than 2,400 coral reefs called cays. The two most inhabited islands are New Providence and Grand Bahama. Eleuthera, Andros, Abaco, Exuma, Long Island, Cat Island, Bimini, Harbor Island, Spanish Wells, Inagua, San Salvador and Acklins are also among the better populated islands.

The uninhabited island of Big Major Cay is also world-famous in the Bahamas, where around 20 swimming pigs on the beach, which has now been renamed “Pig Beach”, attract numerous guests and tourists on day trips.

By far the largest cities in the country are the capital Nassau and Freeport. Almost 80% of the entire population of the island state live in both cities. The people living in the Bahamas are predominantly very Christian.

The official language in the Caribbean country is English and the Bahamian dollar is used as the national currency, with 1 euro corresponding to around 1.10 BSD. The island nation is relatively wealthy compared to the rest of the Caribbean region.

The most important industry in the Bahamas is tourism, which employs around 70% of the working population. Cruise ships in particular, mainly from Miami in the USA, often head to several destinations in the Bahamas.

The emerging tourism received another significant boost in the 1980s with various films from the James Bond series that were filmed in the Bahamas.

The country's main export products are pineapples, onions, citrus fruits, tomatoes and cucumbers from agriculture, extracted sea salt, various types of wood and a few fishery products.

The capital and largest city of the Caribbean island state of the Bahamas is Nassau on the island of New Providence, with around 250,000 inhabitants. Due to a very loose tax policy, numerous financial companies have settled in the city in recent decades. This tax haven, Nassau, is also where most of the world's cruise ships are registered as their home port.

Nassau's main attractions include the Atlantis Paradise Island Casino and Resort - one of the largest hotel complexes in the world, the Pirate Museum, the Grand Harbor, the Local History Museum, Fort Fincastle, the Bahamas Historical Museum, Fort Charlotte, the Parliament Building. and government buildings, Fort Montagu, the Pompey Museum, “Queens Staircase” – the Queen's staircase as a landmark of Nassau and the Straw Market.

So far I have visited the Bahamas twice on all of my trips, over 25 years ago to the city of Freeport, on the island of Grand Bahama, with a boat trip from Miami and in July 2015 to the capital Nassau on New Providence. In the morning I took off from New York City with Delta Airlines.

I chose my simple middle-class hotel right in the city center, not far from the Hard Rock Cafe. In beautiful weather conditions, the harbor was the first stop on my city tour. The very modern port of Nassau, with its huge cruise ships, some of which docked at the same time, and its many surrounding small shops, was of course a very busy place and caused a lot of hustle and bustle.

After my entire city tour had ended in the early evening with some interesting photos, I went to the cozy harbor promenade. Because all the bars and restaurants are right on the water, that was the real highlight of Nassau for me. What remains in my memory is the breathtaking sunset, which I was able to admire from there.

Otherwise, it seemed like Nassau's best days were already behind it. There was enormous, almost never-ending car traffic there, which had dampened my mood a bit just from walking.

After two days in the capital Nassau during my long nine-week Caribbean tour, I then went on to the island of Jamaica.
